Here are 11 ways to hire the right team for your move:

1. Don’t let your mover phone it in

A reputable moving company will take inventory of all your belongings and determine the bulk and weight of your move. The estimator should be thorough and check all of your storage places such as cupboards, drawers, garages and bookcases. A large component of the mover’s price is based on the weight of your stuff and the space your goods take up in the truck. Be sure you understand this estimate and that it is as accurate as possible.

2. Look for more than a cursory glance

An estimator who performs a quick walk-through without noting what you plan to move is going to be off the mark. A good estimator will ask questions about what you plan to take from your current house to your next home. So, be sure you are prepared to tell the estimator which items you don’t want on the truck—the items you plan to give away, donate to a charity, sell in a yard sale, or leave behind for the new owners.

3. Don’t pay a large deposit

Reputable movers won’t demand cash or a large deposit before moving. You should only pay upon delivery. If you pay in advance, you have no control over when you will see your belongings again. When you do pay, use a credit card to help protect you from possible fraudulent activity.

4. Avoid the name switch

Some companies avoid being assessed by the Better Business Bureau by doing business under a variety of names. Be sure the company has a local address and information about licensing and insurance. Their employees should answer the phone with the full name of the business.

Find out if there are any other names the company “does business as,” as well as their state and federal license numbers. Search online to see if there are complaints about the company. To find out more about the company’s history, call the consumer complaints hotline at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, 888-368-7238.

5. Get references

If your friends and family don’t have recommendations, get a list of reliable movers from associations such as the American Moving and Storage Association and state associations of movers.

Ask any mover you speak with for references. Tell them you want a list of three customers from your area who have moved in the past three months. Call those customers and ask direct questions about their experiences.

6. Avoid packing costs

If you pack your belongings yourself, the mover generally isn’t responsible for damage to them. However, if you have your mover do the packing, you may pay inflated prices for boxes and packing materials, not to mention time and labor. If you decide to have the movers pack, ask about the packers’ experience. Most packers are  careful, but you want to avoid the chance of getting someone who tosses whatever they can into a box and then seals it up with little regard for breakage.

7. Beware of extra fees

Do you live in a two-story house or are you moving into one? Moving to or from a 10th-floor apartment? If so, you’ll likely be charged extra for the movers’ having to negotiate stairs and elevators. Have a narrow street that won’t fit a moving van? Expect a surcharge for the transfer of your belongings to a smaller truck for delivery. Make sure to ask your mover about any additional fees that may apply to your situation.

8. Avoid a blank contract

Never sign a blank contract. Get absolutely everything in writing. The mover’s estimate and any extra fees should be listed, as well as your pick-up and delivery dates.

Read your contract and make sure all of your belongings are listed. If your laptop isn’t labeled on the inventory form you sign before the driver leaves, you can’t expect it to be in the box when he arrives. You can’t file a claim for something that doesn’t appear on the inventory list.

9. Don’t accept the “guaranteed” quote

There are three kinds of moving contracts:

A non-binding estimate on your contract means the company cannot require payment more than 10% above the original estimate. Any overages must by paid within 30 days of delivery.

A non-binding to exceed estimate on your contract insures that you will not have to pay for any overages to the original estimate. The estimate is the maximum you’ll be required to pay for any services rendered.

A binding estimate on your contract is supposed to be a guaranteed price for the move and all extras and services. If you request additional services (such as unpacking), any extra fees must be paid within 30 days of delivery.

10. Don’t let the window of opportunity close

You have nine months to report any problems to the moving company and file an insurance claim. So if you’re opening boxes a year later and find shards of glass, you’re out of luck.

On moving day, try to open each box and sift through it to check for damage. Note any problems on the mover’s copy of the bill of lading before signing it.

Your mover has 30 days to acknowledge receipt of your claim. Within 120 days of receiving it, he must deny your claim or make an offer to pay.

11. Understand insurance and valuation protection

All moving companies are required to assume liability for the value of the goods they transport. However, there are two different levels of liability. You need to be aware of the charges that apply and the amount of protection provided by each level.

Full (Replacement) Value Protection: This is the most comprehensive plan available for the protection of your goods. Unless you select the Alternative Level of Liability described below, your shipment will be transported under your mover’s Full (Replacement) Value Protection level of liability. With this plan, whenever an article is lost, destroyed or damaged while in your mover’s custody, the mover has the option to either:

      • Repair the article to the extent necessary to restore it to the same condition as when it was received by your mover, or pay you for the cost of repairs.
      • Replace the article with an article of like kind and quality, or pay you for the cost of replacement.

Alternative Level of Liability: This no-cost option is the most economical protection available, but it provides only minimal protection. Under this option, the mover assumes liability for no more than 60 cents per pound, per article. Loss or damage claims are settled based on the pound weight of the article multiplied by 60 cents. For example, if a 10-pound stereo component valued at $1,000 were lost or destroyed, the mover would be liable for no more than $6 (10 pounds x 60 cents). There is no extra charge for this minimal protection, but you must sign a specific statement on the bill of lading agreeing to it. If you do not select this alternative level of liability, your shipment will be transported at the full (replacement) value level of liability and you will be assessed the applicable valuation charge.

There you have it! These guides will surely alert you if something not right with the mover you want to take part in your moving day. Also, you might want to check this additional information on how not to get scammed by dishonest movers.

First seen on: (http://www.moving.com/tips/dont-get-scammed-avoid-shady-movers/)

Prepping for a move? Turn your scam detector on, kids. There are plenty of unethical moving outfits who are more interested in liberating you from your cash than delivering your possessions safe and sound.

Some of the signs are obvious. Poor phone manners should be a big red flag. A website that looks woefully out of date is another. Likewise, a general feeling that the movers are disorganized or lack experience shouldn’t be ignored. None is proof that a company is dishonest, but if your instincts say there’s something fishy, go with your gut.

So, what steps can you take? You’ll want to check out a company’s reputation and its business licenses. Also, make sure the company is willing to come to your home to do a visual inspection of the items you wish to move. If it gives you a quote over the phone without coming to see your stuff, that’s a bad sign.

There aren’t many sure-fires signs that a moving company isn’t on the level, but there is one. If the company demands that you pay in advance or provide an abnormally large portion of the payment before it actually does the move, that should set off alarm bells. Run the other way.

But, like a lot of things related to moving, it comes down to common sense and doing a little homework. So, before you commit to a mover, ask around. Check out websites and references. If a company has a bad reputation, somebody will have written about it online. You don’t want to take a chance when it comes to your stuff. Do your research, and you’ll be far less likely to get burned by shady movers.

As you are planning your relocation, packing heavy items for moving is almost always inevitable as most homes have such household goods. How to pack a heavy item for a move so that it is packed and shipped safely at its final destination? If you want to move such items yourself, then you need to know what to do. An option that will save you your health, effort and time is to call a mover for a quote. After all, it is a totally different thing to rely on professionals for a job – the risks are much smaller than if an item is handled by people without much experience and/ or expertise in moving. Still, if you are intended on packing heavy objects yourself, here is what to do.

What will happen to your items if they get dropped, crushed or thrown? How will they survive? Heavy items are not always unbreakable. How to pack a heavy item in such a way that it will be able to survive the risks of the shipping? First of all, finding the appropriate packing materials is very important. If the item is breakable and/ or valuable, you need to use a way for packing that will keep it safe. You can use packing paper or defect newspaper print. Bubble wrap is also an option – decide which packing supplies are more appropriate also considering the cost of it (bubble wrap is more expensive). You can use cardboard from broken boxes to fill in the empty space inside the boxes – for cushioning. When packing heavy objects imagine that they are already on their way, being shipped, what can happen to them and how will the packing you have planned protect them? Run the transportation process in your mind – it will help you spot if you are missing something. The best scenario when packing heavy items for moving is:

  1. Get the appropriate packing materials.
  2. Wrap well the items. You can use bubble wrap or any other packing material you find appropriate. If the item is very heavy, you may need to put a thicker layer of packing materials. Remember to tape well the packaging so that it will stick. Don’t use thin moving tape or masking tape because it will not hold larger weight.
  1. Place them in a sound cardboard box that will be able to hold their weight.
  2. Use bubble wrap, packing peanuts or pieces of cardboardto fill in the empty space inside the box. Never use crumpled newsprint or crumpled packing paper as it won’t do the job – it will compress flat and will not provide protection. There should be nothing moving in the box. The object packed should be stable inside. If it moves during shipping it could get damaged and it could damage surrounding objects as well. Heavier items are more likely to shift within a box.
  3. After that place the so packed box in another box that is an inch or two wider and again use enough, strong extra padding between the two boxes.
  4. If you have fragile items, mark that on the box. Also write down “this side up” – it will help get the moving process right. Besides, you need to do the best to protect your belongings.
  5. Distribute the weight between boxes and evenly within each box otherwise they may tilt during carrying. Place the heavy item at the center of the box and then place cushioning material around it.
  6. Don’t make boxes too heavy otherwise they may break and there is a health risk for the moving labor or whoever will be lifting those boxes.
  7. Items that are heavier than 50 lbs best be packed professionally. If you will be packing heavy objects with weight above 80 lbs it is compulsory to get a moving company. In such a case pallets may be used. You can buy them yourself or contact a professional residential packing company to do the packing.
  8. Either way, get moving insurance.

Aside from heavy items, there’s also this item that needs a proper packing before you get into your new home and that is you Television TV. Here’s a tip on how to pack it properly.

Seen first on: (http://blog.upack.com/posts/moving-a-large-screen-tv)

Step 1: Gather your materials

We recommend always using boxes that were made for moving. So what do you need for moving a TV? If you’ve kept the original box, it’s time to dig it out of the back of your closet. Using the original packaging is always the best option because it was designed by the manufacture to exactly fit and protect your TV.

While we recommend boxes for added protection, wrapping your TV in furniture pads or paper padding is also an option — we’ll cover that in more detail below.

Step 2: Disconnect the cords

Carefully unplug and bundle cords together using a rubber band or zip tie. Then, pack the cords with your TV to reduce the chance of losing them in-transit.

Note: You may want to take a picture of where each cord connects before unplugging them. This will be a big help when it comes to putting them back where they belong.

Step 3: Protect the TV screen

Now that you’ve gathered materials and disconnected cords, it’s time to move on to what we think is the most important step in protecting your TV: packing.

How to use a TV shipping box:

  • Remove the TV screen from its base and wrap it using Bubble Wrap®paper padding or foam wrap. Set it aside.
  • Take the box and place crumbled packing paper at the bottom.
  • Wrap the entire TV in Bubble Wrap® or foam wrap to protect it. You can also wrap tape around the entire TV first (sticky-side up of course!) and then wrap the TV using either of these materials. This ensures the wrapping material will not slide up or down during the move. Just be careful not to tape to the TV.
  • After the screen is fully protected, place it in the box and adjust the panels for a tight fit.
  • Use additional crumbled packing paper to fill any gaps.
  • Tape the box, then take a permanent marker and write “fragile” and “this side up” before loading it in the moving truck.

How to use moving blankets or paper padding:

  • When using either of these products, make sure to wrap the TV with several layers. Use at least 2 layers on the screen portion of the TV.
  • Be sure to tape the packing material to TV to keep it in place during transit(NOTE: never put tape sticky-side down on the TV screen).
  • Always keep the TV upright. You may want to use a permanent marker to write on the outside of paper padding as a reminder of which side is up.

Step 4: Loading your TV for shipping

No matter what type of TV you own, avoid laying it on its side in the moving truck—most shouldn’t be tilted more than 15 degrees (check with your user’s manual for verification). Flat screen TVs are made of lightweight glass and too much pressure can be placed on the screen if it isn’t stored upright.

Tips on Packing Fragile Items

How to Prepare your Items Before Moving

Having an expert to handle things like packing delicate things before moving into your new home will be less of effort than doing it on your own. They can ensure that your important porcelain dishes and wine glasses won’t have a scratch when it arrives on your new home.

It is recommended to choose a relocation services as they know exactly what needs to be done when you move into a different place. Wolley Movers, Inc offers packing supplies and services. They can handle small and big items to move and pack into small to large boxes and ensure that all your items are safe and intact. Here’s a great tips for you to get started.

First seen on: (http://www.themovingblog.com/tips-to-pack-fragile-items/)

Dishes are to be packed in small or medium boxes; larger boxes will be heavy to carry and may break under the pressure of the weight in them. Line the boxes with ample packing paper on the inside and wrap every dish with it. You can also use bubble wrap which is more protective but also more expensive. After packing each plate, secure the packing with tape and place it vertically in the box. Use crumpled packing paper in the empty spaces around the plates for cushioning. Make sure that you put in every box only what it can hold.

Glasses are to be wrapped with packing paper. Again, line up small or medium boxes with packing paper, arrange the glasses and fill the empty space with crumpled packing paper. If you want to arrange items in the boxes on layers, place the largest and/ or heaviest items on the bottom of the boxes and smaller, lighter things on top. When packing fragile items for moving, this will ensure a better protection for them.
Picture frames should be packed in cardboard or bubble wrap and taped. Place smaller picture frames in boxes, lined with packing paper, and place enough crumpled packing paper in the empty space in the box for best protection. Pack larger picture frames in moving blankets.
You might be tempted to save from packing boxes for fragile items and other packing supplies by using towels, blankets, newsprint, etc. Newsprint is cheaper indeed but it may leave stains on your belongings and if they are more expensive or of high emotional value for you and you wish to preserve them well, it is not worth the risk to destroy them. Towels and blankets may slip from the item if they are not properly secured, and tape does not stick on them so you cannot tape the packing in this case. For larger items though you could use rope but still it is better to think of the best packing for each item which will protect it best.
Mark the boxes with “FRAGILE” on their top, and at least two of their sides. Another thing you could do is to get colorful stickers, for example red, and stick them on the tops and sides of the boxes with fragile things in. Put arrows on boxes to point which side up. If you can, be there on moving day and inform yourself in advance of the movers liability.

Follow the detailed steps below to learn how to pack dishes safely regardless of the distance your breakables will travel – be it just a few miles across town or a few thousand miles to a place in a far and unknown part of the country.

Step 1: Reinforce with packing tape the bottoms of all the boxes you’re about to use for packing your dishes for moving. Also, strengthen the sides of the containers just to stay on the safe side and avoid any heartbreaking instances of box breakage under the weight of the packed china plates.

Step 2:
The second step to packing dishes for a long distance move, or for a short relocation journey for that matter, is to pad the insides of the moving boxes with crumpled packing paper or newspapers. The idea here is to create a thick insulation layer that will protect the most fragile areas of moving boxes full of kitchen breakables – their bottoms. Skipping this preparation step could seriously endanger the safety of the entire packing operation. Besides paper, you can also use sheets of bubble wrap or a bath towel as bottom protection.

Follow the dish packing steps in this moving guide to keep your kitchen breakables safe when moving house.

Step 3: Have the stack of soft packing paper ready in the spot you have designated as your packing station (most often and preferably, your kitchen table, of course).

Step 4: Place a fragile kitchen piece onto the center of the stack and cover it by pulling a few sheets over the breakable plate. Working diagonally from one corner onto the next one, wrap the piece completely by ticking in the paper ends in the very center of the plate and taping the bundle if necessary.

Step 5: If you deem it necessary, you can thoughtfully wrap the ready bundles in a single additional sheet of bubble wrap to guarantee that no kitchen plate will be found broken when the unpacking process in your new home gets under way. However, if you decide there’s no real need to go that far, you should take advantage of that extra protection for your more expensive and valuable sets of kitchen plates.

Step 6: Place the wrapped up plates into the boxes one by one. The proper technique for arranging your kitchen breakables is to lay them inside the moving containers standing on their edges and never flat. Another dish packing tip to keep in mind is that heavier plates should always go to the box bottom while the lighter fragile kitchenware goes on top of them.

Step 7: Each arranged row of kitchen plates should be protected from the next one with the help of adequate insulators – paper, bubble wrap, towels, or any other piece of clothing for that matter.

Step 8: Fill in any remaining places inside the boxes to immobilize the entire package. Needless to say, the main idea here is no part of any piece to be touching another during the numerous handling instances of the dish boxes that are about to come.

Step 9: When you’re done arranging the kitchen breakable in a cardboard box, place one final protective layer of paper or bubble wrap, close the lid shut and tape it in place.

Step 10: Here comes the final step of packing dishes when moving which most people tend to overlook – labeling the moving box. Take a black (or red) marker pen and write KITCHEN PLATES, HANDLE WITH CARE, and FRAGILE on at least 3 sides of each container.

Simple Tips For Packing Your Car

  1. Inspect your car carefully. Before you get it ready for the move, it should be explored in detail. Packing your car for a move will really be successful if you know all the faults it has. Since it will be a while from the moment you give it to the movers up to when you take it, you need to be aware. When the movers take your car, you will inspect it together and note down and defects like dents and scratches. This is very important because when you get your car back there will be a second inspection to see if any damages have occurred. If you first inspection was detailed enough, during the second one you will see if your car has new damages.
  2. Empty your vehicle. There should be no luggage hanging around in your car or in the trunk during the move. Items left inside could get damaged, and they could cause damages to your car. Besides, the movers will never take your car if there are objects inside that are able to move freely while the vehicle is in motion. If you want to leave stuff inside the trunk for moving, consult the moving company first.
  3. Remove moveable objects from it like radio or antenna. All items in or outside your car that could detach from it are a potential danger for the car because they could detach and cause damages, or break.
  4. Moving locally is easier. You could prepare your car and drive it yourself. Select luggage that is essential to you and load it into the car. Remember to also think about your own health and safetyin the meantime, not just your car’s. If your family is coming along, you need to decide how much space you will have left for any luggage. Using your car to move is convenient for shorter distances, and you could stop any time you want, eat at any restaurant that you want and take a room for the night at any hotel that you decide. And you don’t have to think about local transportation. Such a way to move when relocating short distance could save you a bit of time.
  5. For a cross country move you could choose to have your car shipped or to hire a driver to take it there. If you want your car to be taken somewhere, you could also ask friends to help. Both scenarios have their pros and cons. If you have your auto shipped, you will be able to protect it from the journey it will have to take otherwise. In case you choose to have your car driven to your new home, it will be exposed to mud and dirt on the road, the weather conditions, and a very long trip will wear it down to some extend. If you car is going to be shipped, you have a choice between an open and closed container. The open container is cheaper, but the closed container provides better protection. If your auto is more pricey, it is advisable that you use a closed trailer.
  6. Choose the movers carefully. You need a reputable, reliable car moving company. This is a good option because movers can help you organize your move. Read some reviews, get some quotes and make your choice carefully. Here is a one good source for that purpose which could offer free quotes, lots of reviews, free quotes, and the largest online database in the USA with real moving company reviews – a website worth checking out. Inform yourself of the hidden costs of the moving companies. Just choose a moving date that is convenient for them as well, i.e. they are available then.
  7. And even if you have a big move to organize, remember to try and keep your sense of humor during the move – it will help you to keep not just your mood but also your friends’ or movers’.

Here’s another thing to add on your checklist when preparing your car for transport. These are just simple things that you can do to make sure your car is ready on your moving day. Check out these tips.

Seen first on: (http://www.moving.com/auto-transport/preparing-vehicle.asp)

One of the most common jobs auto transport companies handle is the transportation of vehicles from one residence to another. But, these companies do not drive the vehicles to their new home; the vehicles are loaded on a multi-car carrying truck, not unlike the trucks used to deliver brand new cars to the dealership for sale, and delivered to the new residence or the auto transportation company’s regional depot. In order for your vehicle to arrive as expected, it’s important to first prepare it for the shipping process. Here are eight things you must do before seeing your car picked up by the car shipping company.

Wash the Vehicle

Dirt and dust can easily hide minor dings, scratches and dents so before you have the auto transport company pick up your vehicle, wash it thoroughly so it is nice and clean. This way, once it arrives at its destination, you’ll be better able to notice any possible damage caused by the shipping process that would have otherwise been missed.

Clean and De-Clutter the Vehicle’s Interior

While the vehicle is in transport, it may experience some jostling so in order to avoid things from being tossed around inside your car, clean the interior and remove everything that’s not buttoned down. This includes air fresheners and your spare change. You should also remove all of your electronics and their supporting cables and chargers. This will help reduce the risk of theft.

Disable Alarms

Some vehicles have very sensitive alarm systems and the subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, movements of the auto transport truck can cause them to go off. To avoid making an enemy of the truck driver, be sure you disable any alarm systems your vehicle may have.

Do Not Fill the Tank

Your vehicle is being transported, not driven, so there’s no need to fill the tank with gas prior to loading. In addition, having a full tank of gasoline will make the vehicle heavier which will ultimately add weight and risk to the shipment being transported. Leave as little fuel in the tank as possible when preparing your vehicle for transport.

Check for Leaks

Before your car or truck gets loaded onto the delivery truck, check the undercarriage for any noticeable leaks. If your vehicle has an aggressive leak, the car shipping company may refuse service so if you see a leak, get it repaired prior to moving day. After all, you wouldn’t want the vehicle placed above yours to be dripping oil or transmission fluid all over your car’s finish, would you?

Check Tire Inflation

Under-inflated or over-inflated tires are just as risky in transport as they are on the road and by not having the tires properly inflated, you could be increasing the risk of damage to the tire. Tire damage is most probable during the loading and unloading phase of the transport, but if your tires are properly inflated, you won’t have a problem. If you don’t know the recommended PSI for your car or truck’s tires, check the vehicle’s owner’s manual or look for a label on the inside edge of the driver’s side door.

Remove Custom Accessories

Car spoilers and other special accessories can often extend into areas while in transportation, so to prevent the risk of something breaking, make sure you remove any custom parts or accessories before the vehicle is loaded onto the car shipping truck.

Lock the Vehicle After Loading

Once your vehicle is loaded onto the auto transport truck, there should be no reason for it to be opened up until it is delivered so lock everything up to reduce the risk of theft while it is being transported.

Roll out the carpet

Start the day by clearing a walkway from your home to the moving truck. Rake up leaves, salt concrete to help reduce ice and sludge, or shovel a path through the snow. This will help keep movers safe while carrying items from the house to the truck. At You Move Me, we roll out old carpet outside of the house and on truck ramps to create a slip-free pathway.

Protect your floors

Most people who live in cold climates know the pain of the accompanying snow, rain, and mud. With people traveling in and out of your house during a move, the outside elements could easily be brought inside. Secure non-slip covers on your floors to help protect them – cardboard or plastic with grip work well.

Pack securely

When packing your goods, make sure they are secured and put in boxes that will easily hold their weight. Don’t overpack boxes either. If items are fragile, wrap them in bubble wrap, newspaper, butcher’s paper or moving blankets. Insulate your goods so the elements don’t ruin pricey or priceless items, including electronics, which are susceptible to frost and moisture. Glass and plastic items can become weakened and more breakable when they are exposed to cold elements and condensation can impact sensitive wood finishes, electronics, and antiques. Even wood glue will become sensitive to the heat fluctuations.

Watch the clock

You should never rush a move, especially in cold, wet, and icy conditions, but do remember that winter months give less daylight, which impact visibility and the quality of lighting. Do what you can to plan ahead so that you are using the daylight hours wisely.

Have the clothes fit the part

Be sure to wear sensible and close-toed shoes for your move, and make sure they have a good grip on them. Choose clothes that can be layered – it will be a cold day, but the activity of moving will quickly warm you up. Layers allow you to easily add or take off items. Hand warmers/pocket warmers are helpful too.

Fuel your body

Start the day well fed and fueled – a hearty breakfast will give you the energy to keep going with the heavy lifting. You might be tempted to drink lots of coffee to stay warm, but make sure you also drink plenty of water to keep hydrated, or substitute coffee for hot water with lemon, ginger and honey!

Take your time

Slow down when moving in wet and snowy conditions. Rushing can lead to slips and spills and can result in injury or damaged possessions. Plan for the move to take longer than usual, as you navigate the winter conditions. It may add some costs or delays to your day, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Know the warning signs

Though you may not be outdoors for extended periods when moving, it’s always best to be safe and know what the symptoms are for exposure to cold temperatures. First aid training is always beneficial, but if you don’t have any training you can educate yourself and anyone helping with the move in regards to the warning signs for issues such as hypothermia.

Remember your furry family members

Moving is already a stressful time for your pets, but the added stress of cold weather can further impact the way they react to the situation. Make sure to pay extra attention to those furry family members, to help alleviate any anxiety and to make sure they have a comfortable move in the cold and wet weather.

To help you have a stress-free move from start to finish, we’re offering you a glimpse at 9 common mistakes when packing for a move. Simply stay away from the following bad packing errors to keep things under control.

#1: To start packing without a good plan
One of the most common mistakes when packing for a move is to just start boxing any household items you can get hold of without having a clear packing strategy in your head or written down on a piece of paper. The major problem with packing up your home on a random principle is that although it feels like you’ve initiated the most time consuming process a residential move can kindly offer, in reality you’re only wasting precious time. And time is exactly what you don’t have the luxury of wasting when getting ready to move out.

The proper course of action here is to create a personal packing calendar which you can consult frequently and stick to diligently in order to increase significantly your packing productivity. Make sure you also prioritize your packing tasks as well to reflect your unique instance of house relocation.

#2: To leave packing jobs for moving day
Later is such a dangerous word, especially when you’re about to pack up your home for a move. Of all common packing mistakes, a classic example would be to leave most of the packing tasks for later in order to take care of a “more urgent” job.

The thing to understand here is that, regardless of how much time you have left until the Big day, the more you tend to procrastinate packing, the harder it will be for you to actually begin the process. Procrastination will lead to stress, stress will lead to panic, and panic will lead to bad decisions.

Write this down or just make sure you remember this fundamental move related concept: the only way to get something done the right way is to start working on it right away. In other words, initiate the arduous packing process the moment your house move is confirmed.

#3: To think that sorting your items is a waste of time
Speaking of common moving mistakes when packing for a move, another blunder when moving house is to assume that the required step of sorting household items can be skipped without any serious consequences. Of course, there’s a good reason why some people get the impression that they will save a lot of valuable time by packing everything they own now and sorting it out later when they arrive in their new homes.

There’s only one big problem with this line of thinking – it is completely wrong. In reality, such a packing strategy will not only waste more of your time /packing more items will require more time/, but it will also hurt your budget badly /the more your final shipment weighs, the more money you will pay for its transportation/.

So, don’t skip the pre-move sorting task. In the end, you should take with you only the things you will really need in the foreseeable future.

#4: To assume quality packing supplies are overrated
There are plenty mistakes to avoid when packing for a move, and assuming that you can do without top quality packing materials is probably the most “innocent” error you can ever make during your pre-move preparations.

The main problem, however, is that often a single misjudgment leads to another, and pretty soon you may become confident that you can manage the packing job with just any supplies you can lay your hands on. Which, in turn, will compromise the packing safety of your entire operation.

For example, don’t use cardboard boxes that are visibly in bad shape as they can easily break under the weight of their own contents and cause you unscheduled headaches. While acquiring your packing materials, make sure all of them are clean, dry, sturdy, and have safe and confirmed origins. If you can afford it, do the right thing and purchase most of the required supplies from your local moving company.

#5: To presume you won’t need an essentials box
A packing mistake even super smart people make when moving house is to forget that once they place their possessions into moving containers, they will no longer have access to them until after their shipment is delivered successfully inside their new homes. And without convenient access to a number of really essential household items, things can suddenly become trickier than usual and stress levels can reach unhealthy limits.

Avoid the moving mistake of not packing an essentials box that will contain your absolute life-savers. This is especially important when you have a baby or a toddler, and a long road trip is scheduled ahead of the family.

Here are a few ideas of what you should consider packing up inside your survival kit: bottled water and sandwiches, prescription medications, kitchen utensils, spare clothes, basic toiletries, a set of hand tools, toys, and specific items when moving house with small children and/or pets.

#6: To “save” time by overfilling your boxes
Regardless of what priceless packing tips you’ve read online or heard from friends with considerable moving experience, the worst packing mistakes to avoid at all costs are all connected to safety – safety both for all participants in the move and the actual belongings that are being moved to a new home.

All things considered, spending more money than planned or losing extra hours while placing your stuff inside suitable containers cannot possible match a heartbreaking moving accident due to compromised packing safety.

Here’s a quick packing trick that can save you plenty of troubles: use smaller moving boxes for heavy items and bigger containers for lighter possessions. Never go the other way round as cardboard boxes and human backs both have breaking limits. Remember to not overfill your packing boxes and keep a reasonable weight limit of a single packed container of around 40-45 pounds, especially when you’re packing books.

#7: To leave empty spaces in your moving boxes
Another safety related packing mistake that people tend to make is to leave empty spaces in the packed cardboard boxes when packing breakable items. This qualifies as a packing error not because the inside of the container won’t be fully utilized, but because any available room that is not taken care of through suitable filling and padding materials can cause any fragile objects to come into contact with one another. As a result, such undesirable contacts can only lead to chipped, broken or ruined highly delicate and breakable pieces.

So, don’t skimp on padding and filling supplies! Use crumped pieces of packing paper or newspapers, as well as sheets of bubble wrap or pieces of old but clean clothing (bath towels are the best!) to fill in any remaining spaces inside a box and thus, immobilize its contents. A good way to test whether or not you’ve done a good job packing your breakables inside a moving box is to lift the container and shake it gently. If you hear a (muffled) clanking sound or feel that something is moving inside, start over.

#8: To go ahead and pack items you shouldn’t have
One of the most common packing mistakes when moving house is to prepare certain household goods for transportation only to learn later that your movers won’t load them on their truck due to their hazardous nature. Needless to say, packing non-allowable items will only lead to loads of wasted time and efforts.

Avoid this rookie moving mistake by asking your moving company to give you the full list of goods forbidden for transportation. Once you have that checklist in your hands, you’ll be able to figure out what to do with each individual item well before your move-out date.

In general, such non-allowables fall into 4 categories:

Hazardous goods: flammable, explosive or corrosive substances that can hurt a person or damage the moving vehicle or other possessions in transit.
Perishables: mostly perishable foods that can go bad on the road or ruin other goods.
Pets: it’s up to you to transport your pet(s) safely to your new home.
Plants: your leafy friends can be too fragile to survive a relocation trip. Consider entrusting them to a good friend to take care of them for you.
#9: To believe your memory is too good to label your boxes
Are you in the mood to lose hours of valuable post relocation time searching through piles of freshly delivered moving boxes only to find your bedding? We thought so.

Interestingly enough, some common packing mistakes when moving house come as a result of overconfidence. A great example of such a moving error will be to assume that you have infallible memory and will somehow manage to remember what’s inside each box without having to label the containers. Even if you are truly proud of your memorizing skills, it’s good to remember that the chaotic period of moving from one home to another is notorious for playing tricks with people’s minds.
Yes, failure to label your boxes correctly is a good example of moving mistakes you don’t have to make. Just take a black marker pen and mark each packed container with its detailed contents, destination room and special handling instructions both for yourself and for your helpers. The usage of colored labels for each individual destination room is also encouraged.

In addition, it is best not to assume that everything can be done by yourself. It is important that you know when to seek help, when things gets tough. There are several options on how to hire a great helper to help you on your moving day. You may check out this article for tips.
